Look cool this winter

October 1st, 2009

Texture: Ruffles

Heavily used in Chloe, Roberto Cavalli and Fendi’s winter collections, ruffles are all the rage this season. Something as feminine as ruffles can scare a lot of women, but fear not, if worn correctly they can flatter ladies of all shapes and sizes. For ladies with slim figures, try wearing skirts with ruffles or tops with ruffle details on the chest,to accentuate your curves and to add shape, like this dress from Next.  Ladies with curvaceous figures should try adding just an element to an outfit such as ruffles on the shoulders of a cardigan or trim of a coat.

Top tip: Remember not to overindulge in this trend, focus on one ruffled element at a time or else it will be too much.  And, to add an edge to your ruffles, team them with something tailored- the contrast between the super feminine ruffles and a tailored item such as a blazer will make a style impact.

Fabric: Sequins

Forget images of Shirley Bassey and feather boas, sequins are back and are guaranteed to add some sparkle this season. And with so many types of sequinned items in the stores, from houndstooth print and sequinned dresses to sequinned heels, and blazers with embellishment to all over sequinned leggings, there is something for everyone. We love this sequin miniskirt from Miss Selfridge at Outfit, wear it with a plain t-shirt, tights and leather jacket for daytime chic, or team with a pretty top and heels for a night out with the girls.

Top tip: Avoid jewellery when wearing sequins, as they add enough glitz to an outfit on their own. They also look great dressed down with a pair of jeans and a leather jacket.

Shoes: Ankle Boots

A favourite with celebrities Sienna Miller and Mischa Barton, ankle boots are back with a vengeance this season. They’re sleek, sophisticated and bang on trend, but more importantly they’re a look which all ladies can pull off effortlessly.

We love this fabulous pair from Clarks, which would look great with a pair of skinny jeans or leggings and teamed with chunky knitwear or a boyfriend style cardigan. For ladies who love their legs, why not wear a pair of sky-high ankle boots with your favourite miniskirt or little black dress to update the look.

Top tip: Don’t forget to wear tights or long leggings with your ankle boots when wearing skirts and dresses, bare legs just won’t cut it. And don’t be afraid to experiment, there are so many quirky patterned and coloured ankle boots out there this season, they’ll take any outfit from drab to fab.
