Ladyhawke releases debut album

Ladyhawke releases what is an ambitious and exciting debut record. Named after the 1980s fantasy film of the same title, Ladyhawke is the stage name of New Zealand-based electro-pop performer, Phillipa "Pip" Brown.

A self titled album, bursting with energy and attitude, 'Ladyhawke' is a superb blend of 1980s electronic pop and modern-day indie with 1970s rock 'n' roll undertones. Thick and full electronic lines compliment shimmering electric guitars, while Brown's fiery and vibrant vocals provide infectious melodies throughout.

Inspired by her passion and love of the ‘80’s, Brown, often helped by producer Pascal Gabriel, adds sparkle to her songs with accessible synth-heavy arrangements, as demonstrated in the catchy single ‘Paris Is Burning.’ Touring with likeminded bands such as the Tings Tings, Ladyhawke easily fits in with other New Wave-loving acts, most notably CSS, Cut Copy, Annie, and Robyn.

Every track on the album is like a tribute to the ‘80’s, as Ladyhawke clearly takes her inspiration from her favourite ‘80’s artists, such as ‘Manipulating Woman’, which bears a resemblance to Cyndi Lauper, ‘Better than Sunday’, which sounds like Kylie, and ‘Magic’ which oozes similar tones to the Pet Shop Boys.

It’s lucky for us that the ‘80’s just refuse to die and Ladyhawke certainly makes the decade retro cool with a great mix of rock and electro pop with loads of catchy songs, including her hit single and a brilliant track, ‘My Delerium’. It’s a fantastic debut album- it’s fresh, the songs are infectious and it’s definitely pop at its best.
