The boy from Blackheath releases hit record

Originally from Blackheath, Anglo-Spanish singer-songwriter, Jack Peñate, arrived on the scene in the wake of Jamie T and Lily Allen. With a similar vibe - indie-skank and reggae rhythms - as Jamie T, Peñate was snapped up by his record label after playing several energetic and well-received gigs in his native London.

Peñate's breakthrough came with his third single, ‘Torn On The Platformö’, which reached number seven in the charts on its release in June 2007. The new album, ‘Everything is New’, recorded over twelve months in producer Paul Epworth's own west London home studio and released yesterday (22 June), this is a giant musical leap from Peñate's debut record.

The album is a Technicolor record full of experimentation and possibility. Featuring the house grooves of 'Tonight's Today' and the swaggering soul of 'Be The One', the album fuses Peñate's wide-eyed pop songwriting with the music he's always loved and lived. He successfully brings Brazilian Tropicalia, Krautrock, New Orleans marching bands, Bashment, Afrobeat, lo-fi grooves, Reggaeton and Philly Soul into the mix over a nine track record that delights and surprises at every turn.

The follow-up album to 2007's, Matinée, shows Peñate's growth as a songwriter. Whilst moving away from the indie-rockabilly sound that defined his first album, and towards a more alternative sound inspired by afro-beat and calypso music, Peñate still uses the soul-tinged vocals that he has become known for. This musical progression has created a record less poppy than his debut, but certainly more mature.
