A local nursery visited Greenwich Shopping Park on Bugsby’s Way in Charlton today (22 June 2009) to celebrate the first anniversary of the Child Safe Zone scheme launch at the Park, coinciding with the start of Child Safety Week (22-28 June).
Greenwich Shopping Park joined the Child Safe Zone scheme in June last year to protect any children separated from guardians and to reunite them as quickly as possible with a view to make the Park as safe a destination as possible to shop.
To mark the anniversary, toddlers and staff members from Pound Park Neighbourhood Nursery, were presented with a special Child Safe Zone cake by PCSO, Khal Malik of the Greenwich Peninsular Safer Neighbourhood Team, and staff at Costa Coffee located in Next.
The children, aged 3 and 4, were joined by some parents and guardians and given quick and easy tips on staying safe whilst out shopping by the local police community safety officer. As part of the anniversary celebrations Greenwich Shopping Park launched a special e-section on its website, www.greenwichshoppingpark.co.uk which gives parents information, tips and advice on keeping children safe whilst shopping.
Sian Nicholls, spokesperson for Greenwich Shopping Park, said: “We try to make Greenwich Shopping Park a child safe and friendly destination for everyone to visit and we’re keen to make more people aware that the Child Safe Zone scheme exists. The new e-section will give parents easy access to information about the Child Safe Zone scheme and staff and security members at the Park will also be able to give information to shoppers.”
Sheena Gilby, from Pound Park Neighbourhood Nursery, said: “The children enjoyed visiting the Park and we’re all delighted to be supporting the Child Safe Zone scheme’s anniversary. Keeping children safe is part of what we do as a nursery and it’s encouraging to see the Park is committed to making the place safe for everyone.” Costa Store Manager, Rasa Kuzminaite, said: “Costa is delighted to support this worthwhile event and has thoroughly enjoyed hosting the cake cutting event to help the local children of Greenwich celebrate this day.”
How Child Safe Zone scheme works:
-The Child Safe Zone scheme operates by offering parents and guardians a special hotline number, displayed on bright and eye-catching posters throughout the Park to call if their child goes missing whilst out shopping.
-Once a parent calls the dedicated Child Safe Zone hotline the security team uses a co-ordinated approach and CCTV to re-unite them with their children as swiftly as possible.
-Children are provided with free wristbands with parents’ or guardians’ mobile numbers written on them so that, in the event of a child being lost, the parent or guardian can be contacted quickly, by the person that finds them.
-The wristbands are available free of charge at Greenwich Shopping Park’s security office or at any store. Children will be advised to approach another parent with children to ask for help if they become separated from their own family.
