Budding fashion designer scoops prize for ‘Yummy Mummy’ creation

November 20th, 2008

Aspiring fashion designer, Jade Blyth from Essex, has won first prize in Greenwich Shopping Park’s ‘Yummy Mummy’ initiative, which challenged 15 students from Greenwich Community College to design the perfect outfit for a group of mothers at a Charlton parent and toddler group.

Greenwich Shopping Park launched the initiative in September during ‘Yummy Mummy Week’ (20-28 September) to set students from the BTEC National Diploma in Fashion & Clothing course the task of designing both practical and fashionable outfits for mums at Charlton Park Playcentre Jade, aged 18, designed an outfit consisting smart-casual black trousers with turn-ups, red ballet pumps, a red polar neck jumper, a wool wraparound along with a broach and a necklace.

Jade said: “I’m ecstatic to have won the competition and it was a great project to have been involved in. From taking the mums’ brief to putting pen to paper, you simply wouldn’t get this type of experience unless you interact with people in a real-life situation. The mums also gave brilliant feedback that I’m sure we’ll all be able to take on board and use constructively.

“The reason I chose this outfit is because the mums wanted something comfortable and smart, and I think that the outfit embodies this. I chose black trousers as they are loose fitting in style and dark, which makes them very flattering.

“I chose red ballet pumps as they are flat and comfortable, yet still elegant and feminine, so although the mums are wearing flat shoes, they’ll still look smart. I teamed the red pumps with a red polar neck, because again I wanted something flattering and comfortable, and the colour co-ordination keeps the look smart. I wanted to chose a bold colour to prevent the outfit from looking dull, and thought red would be perfect, especially for the festive season.

“To bring the look more up-to-date, I studied the styles available in fashion stores at Greenwich Shopping Park, and found that shawls and wraparounds are huge this season. Not only are they a way of keeping warm, but they make any outfit look more on trend- which is perfect for the mums. I added a broach and a necklace to the outfits to, again, contemporise the whole outfit.”

The assignment began by two students visiting the parent and toddler group to take a brief from the mothers on what would be their perfect outfit. The budding fashion designers later presented the information and brief to other students studying on the same course. Following the brief from the mums, the students had six weeks to visit the stores at Greenwich Shopping Park to study the styles, patterns and fabrics that are setting the trends this season, whilst incorporating the mothers’ brief, and considering clothes, shoes and accessories the students presented their perfect Yummy Mummy outfits to the mums.

The final designs were given to the mums to pick their favourite ‘Yummy Mummy’ outfit, which won its stylist Jade £50 of shopping vouchers to spend at Greenwich Shopping Park. The Park also donated £25 of book vouchers to the parent and toddler group to be spent at WHSmith.

Sara Ives, a mother of four from Charlton who attends the group regularly, said: “The reason that we chose Jade’s outfit is because it’s very on trend with the wraparound and broach, but at the same time it’s comfortable and easy to wear. I loved the splash of colour by teaming the red pumps and red jumper together, a look that is perfect for Christmas Day.”

Carol Amestoy, organiser of the parent and toddler group and mum of two, said: “All of the students’ designs were brilliant, and they have definitely listened carefully to the brief provided by the mums. Myself, and the rest of the mums, have really enjoyed being a part of the whole project.”

Vicki Savage, Fashion Lecturer at Greenwich Community College and Official Fashion Guru for Greenwich Shopping Park said: “This was a great assignment, as it gave the students hands-on, practical experience. Fashion designers should always have a clear image of their market before they put pencil to paper, so it was invaluable experience for the students to meet the mums face-to-face to truly understand what they are looking for. It was a challenge for the students to incorporate key trends along with individual requirements, but I think they’ve pulled it off and should be very proud of themselves.”

Sian Nicholls, spokesperson for Greenwich Shopping Park said: “This was a very important initiative for Greenwich Shopping Park, as not only did it provide the students with invaluable experience, but I’m sure it made the mums from the local parent and toddler group feel great too.”
